Rural Summer Meal Programs

This summer, Angela traveled to three rural school districts to observe, document and interview participants about their experiences with the new Summer 2023 Non-Congregate Meal Service in Rural Communities program.

The program became a permanent resource for rural communities after President Biden signed the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023 on December 29, 2022.

The program is new, but inspired and informed by the efforts of school districts to feed children during the pandemic. As we await the final mandate from the USDA, Share Our Strength’s Innovation Team partnered with Project Reflect to learn more about the program and identify best practices from three rural school districts located in Georgia, Arizona and California. These learnings and recommendations will be shared in an upcoming report and webinar in late 2023.
